School Program

The Town of Allan’s Before & After-School Program provides a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children before and after the regular school day.

The program is designed to support local families by providing reliable care while giving children opportunities to learn, play, stay active, build friendships, and develop new skills.

Program Details

Program Season: September to June
Days: Monday to Friday, on regular school days
Before School: 7:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.
After School: 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Location: Allan Composite School
Ages: Children 3–12 years of age

What We Offer

The program provides a variety of age-appropriate activities designed to support learning, creativity, physical activity, and social development.

• Homework assistance

 Arts & Creativity

Children can explore their creativity through:

• Drawing and painting

• Arts and crafts

• Seasonal and cultural projects

• Music and dance

• Drama and creative activities

 STEM Activities

STEM activities may include:

• Science experiments

• Building and engineering challenges

• Problem-solving activities

• Coding games for older children

• Hands-on learning projects

Physical Activity

Children have opportunities to stay active through:

• Outdoor playground activities

• Sports and group games

• Obstacle courses

• Team-building activities

• Indoor movement activities when weather does not permit outdoor play

Social Development

The program encourages children to develop positive relationships and social skills through:

• Cooperative games

• Group activities

• Team-building

• Communication and cooperation

• Conflict-resolution activities

• Opportunities for leadership and self-expression

Quiet & Relaxation Time

Children will also have opportunities to relax and choose from quieter activities such as:

• Reading

• Board games

• Puzzles

• Building activities

• Drawing and art

Before School

The morning program provides children with a calm and positive start to their day.

Activities may include:

• Arrival and check-in

• Breakfast and social time

• Reading and quiet activities

• Homework or literacy activities

• Creative activities and games

• Light physical activity

• A supported transition to the school day

The goal is to help children begin their school day feeling comfortable, prepared, and ready to learn.

After School

The after-school program begins after the regular school day and runs until 6:30 p.m.

Children may participate in:

• Arrival and healthy snack time

• Homework and reading support

• Arts and crafts

• STEM and hands-on activities

• Outdoor or indoor physical activities

• Group games and team-building

• Social and emotional learning activities

• Free-choice activities and supervised play

Activities will vary throughout the week to provide children with a balance of learning, creativity, physical activity, and social interaction.

Community Activities

Most activities will take place at Allan Composite School. Where appropriate, the program may also use community facilities and outdoor spaces for special activities and themed programming, including:

• Allan & District Communiplex

• Allan Swimming Pool

• Allan Centennial Park

• Allan Bowling Alley

Activities for Different Ages

Activities will be adapted to suit children's ages and developmental needs.

​

Ages 3–5

Younger children may participate in:

• Play-based learning

• Sensory activities

• Storytime

• Imaginative play

• Arts and crafts

• Shorter, age-appropriate activities

​

Ages 6–12

Older children may participate in:

• Homework support

• Group projects

• STEM and problem-solving activities

• Sports and physical activities

• Creative projects

• Leadership opportunities

Healthy Snacks

Healthy snacks will be provided during the before- and after-school program. The program will take children's allergies and dietary needs into consideration. Nuts and sesame will not be included in program snacks.

​

Families should provide staff with information about any allergies or dietary requirements during registration.

​

Safety & Well-Being

The safety and well-being of children is our top priority.

The program includes:

• Supervised activities and age-appropriate programming

• Parent/guardian sign-in and sign-out procedures

• Authorized pick-up procedures

• Regular checks of activity areas and equipment

• Staff trained in first aid and CPR

• Emergency procedures and contact information

• Allergy and dietary considerations

• Clear expectations for safe, respectful behaviour

Children will be supervised during activities, transitions, indoor and outdoor play, and community-based activities.

​

Communication with Families

Communication with parents and guardians is an important part of the program.

Families can expect information about:

• Program activities and upcoming events

• Schedule changes and important announcements

• Their child's participation and experiences

• Any incidents or concerns involving their child

Parents and guardians are encouraged to share questions, concerns, or suggestions with program staff.

​

A Positive Place to Learn, Play & Grow

The Allan Before & After-School Program is designed to give children a safe and positive place to spend time outside of regular school hours.

Through learning, creativity, physical activity, and social connection, the program provides children with opportunities to learn, play, build friendships, and grow in a supportive community environment.

LILO PARENT COMMUNICATION APP:

To help keep families connected and informed, our Before & After School Program will be using the Lilo app for parent communication and program updates. Lilo provides a simple and convenient way for parents and program staff to stay connected throughout the day. Through the app, parents may receive important program information, announcements, reminders, messages, and updates regarding their child’s participation in the program. The app will also help our staff communicate with families in an organized and timely manner, while keeping program information in one convenient place. Parents will be provided with information on how to download and set up the Lilo app before their child begins the program. We encourage all parents/guardians to activate their account and check the app regularly for important updates. Our goal is to make communication between families and our Before & After School Program easy, convenient, and consistent.
